Prairie Home Companion - the movie

| |

I like Garrison Keillor and I like "A Prairie Home Companion". This movie left me feeling ...

Spoiler alert, stop reading now if you don't want me to spoil the movie for you.

OK, I warned you.

Prairie Home Companion left me feeling frustrated.

The best parts of Garrison's radio show were there, but also the worst parts. Unfortunately the movie was mostly the worst parts. The worst parts of a Prairie Home Companion are these odd stories without a point where characters walk on and off the stage for no reason. Now sometimes Mr. Keillor's wandering stories build to a fabulous ending but there are these shows where they are flat and just don't end well. This movie was a homage to that style of story telling. Guy Noir was terrible and the "angel of death" was unnecesary. The dialog, which the movie was heavy with didn't really crackle and pop.

Dusty and Lefty singing the joke song was the highlight of the movie but even that was lame. I much prefer the annual joke show on APHC.

Truth be known, I would like a best of DVD set of the actual Prairie Home Companion radio show. I would enjoy that far more than this thin plot with very few laughs.

I hope if Garrison raises enough money to make a Lake Wobegon movie he hires out the screenwriting and gets a different director.

I wanted to like this movie but in the end there was really nothing to like.
