I wasn't impressed with google reader initially. Unlike Gmail, reader came out with a lot of shortcomings, but it's hitting it's stride now. I wish it was a little more integrated into other google offerings like pages or docs, but it's definitely my favorite rss reader by far at this point.
Secretly, the real reason I like it is that my friends sometimes re-share things.

Very true. I use to swear by Gator Net news wire or whatever it was called so I could do offline RSS downloads. When Google Reader got gears offline support I made the jump and haven't looked back. The share feature is starting to replace Digg for me, if they could do a mass-audience Digg style sharing I would stop using Digg completely. And keep sharing good stuff so I can reshare :)
