Death in the Family

TAGS: None

My last remaining great-aunt died last week. You can see her obituary online at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

She was, to my knowledge, the last woman born with the last name of Burlowski until my daughter Elise was born.
Elise and Gertrude

This photo is Gertrude with Elise, at Gertrude’s 90th birthday party. You can see Elise wasn’t too happy about the situation at that moment.

Aunt Gertrude was always fun to visit with. She made a lot of chocolate candy. When we visited it was rare that she didn’t serve us candy or at least give us candy to take home. Looking back on my memories of her, I always seem to think of her smiling.

I’m going back to the homeland for the visitation and funeral mass tomorrow.

Gertrude was the last of her generation in that side of the family. Somehow that makes her passing seem a little more poignant to me.
